Making an Auto Warranty Claim

If one had the foresight to add a warranty to the purchase of their vehicle and finds themselves in a tough spot, they may well be able to save thousands of dollars in repair costs. However, making the warranty claim is going to require that the owner of the vehicle strictly adhered to the terms of the warranty and, if it proves that they didn't, they're likely in for an unpleasant surprise when they make the claim. These terms exist to protect the warranty provider from unreasonable expenses and one can count on them to be followed to the letter.

In most cases, the warranty will require that the vehicle has been maintained according to the manufacturer's schedule. Realize that, in the case of a new vehicle, this may mean several oil changes in a short period of time during the engine break-in period. Generally, the engine will shed bits of metal and other debris as it settles into its intended configuration. Removing contaminated motor oil regularly prevents this from destroying the engine. If it's not done on schedule, expect the auto dealer to void the warranty.

Very hard driving can negate a warranty, as well. Mechanics will generally recognize the signs that a vehicle has been abused. Especially in the drive train, abuse oftentimes results in distinctive forms of wear on the parts. In a manual vehicle, for instance, a burnt out clutch is often the result of drag-racing. While this may be a bit of fun—though it is very dangerous—it will almost certainly void the drive train coverage. Running the engine too hard is usually apparent from the types of damage it inflicts, as well, and the garage will likely refuse to do warranty repairs on a vehicle that was pushed beyond its intended limits.

The two most important things for ensuring that a warranty is honored are keeping up with maintenance and driving conservatively. Even though one may have purchased a sporty, high-performance vehicle, it doesn't mean the vehicle was intended to be "floored" on every freeway entrance and that burn-outs at stoplights are an expected luxury afforded the owner. Drive the vehicle as one normally would drive it, but gently, during the break-in period and get the maintenance done by the dealer on schedule and one can count on their warranty being honored as agreed upon at the purchase.

I did quite a bit of research on Acceptable Warranty. When I saw that Consumer Reports wrote [positively] about you, I was sold.
